Edward Eigen is senior lecturer in the history of landscape and architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design. His work focuses on intersections of the human and natural sciences in the long nineteenth century in the European and Anglo-American contexts. His recent publications in American studies include a critical chronology of the JFK Memorial Library, a speculative restoration of an epitaph written for Cotton Mather’s slave Onesimus, and a bio-bibliography of the reception of Frederick Jackson Turner’s frontier thesis. A proponent of the Montaignian essay tradition, he is the author of On Accident: Episodes in Architecture and Landscape (MIT Press, 2018).
